What is a smart meter?

There are two categories of smart meter under the Smart Metering Technical Equipment Standard (SMETS):
SMETS 1
Installed prior to 2018. Generally rely on cellular networks to relay data. If a consumer switches energy supplier, SMETS 1 meters typically lose their smart functionality and revert to manual reads.
SMETS 2
Newer models that relay data through a dedicated national network (the Data Communications Company network). They maintain full smart functionality across all energy suppliers, regardless of whether the consumer switches provider.
AMR or Smart Meter: Which Is Better?
The distinction between AMR and smart meter has narrowed as the technology has developed. Both can allow local reading and data management. The meaningful difference lies in the communication network and the data frequency.
Transmission
A typical smart meter transmits data once every 24 hours. An AMR meter connected to a fixed network, such as Orion, delivers near real-time data continuously.
