A Commitment to Reducing Environmental Impact - The Theatre Green Book Initiative.

For many years, Glyndebourne has been working to reduce its environmental impact and, in 2021, announced its commitment to halving direct carbon emissions by 2030 and being net zero carbon by 2050. In the same year, the Theatre Green Book (which Glyndebourne had contributed to) published a roadmap for theatres and entertainment venues on how to achieve this.

The Need for Data-Driven Insights.

One of the key call outs of the report was the need to have a data plan. As Danny Harratt, Head of Facilities Management at Glyndebourne, puts it: “we had a team with a vision and capacity to deliver it but, to a certain extent, we were operating blind as our energy consumption data was lumped into monthly bills published in arrears and we had no tools with which to investigate how we used or even where we used (the most) energy”. Glyndebourne turned to Smarter Technologies (STT) to provide the solution.

Implementing Smarter Technologies Solutions.

STT supplied a range of electricity and gas monitors to capture real time usage across the entirety of the estate: covering the theatre, lighting rigs, restaurants, bars, rehearsal rooms and workshops. The data stream, published in SmarterView (STT’s data viewer) allowed the facilities team to understand how energy was being consumed, cut wasteful practices and by incorporating improved data from their wind turbine establish a true net position, for any point during the day for electricity drawn from the Grid versus onsite generation.

Progress and Future Goals.

The results have informed conversations across the business from the cost consideration for lighting directors running a technical rehearsal at peak demand periods through to third party caterers cutting out gas in cooking as there is sufficient electricity on site to support convection hobs.

Harratt is under no illusions as to the task they have set themselves but again as he puts it: “By being able to surface the data and show colleagues the impact we are all having we are making progress, measurable progress towards our goals without compromising the Glyndebourne experience for our patrons.”

STT Director of Sales and Marketing Matthew Margetts added:

“Organisations must be flexible and while the majority of our work is directed towards supporting a company’s sustainability and environmental objectives ultimately these goals have a positive (proven) effect on operations by cutting costs or identifying better ways of working that improve productivity which again impacts the bottom line”.

Continuing the Journey Towards Net Zero..

The team at Glyndebourne will continue on their journey towards net zero carbon building on initiatives such as the phasing out of bottled water through to the installation of 36 EV charging points. They will continue to use more data to evaluate and model the impact of new technologies to ensure each step takes them closer to their objective.
