Pembroke House is a purpose-built care home for veterans of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in Gillingham, Kent. Designed to provide a home-like, caring environment, the care home is part of the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust, which has been prioritising the care needs of veterans for more than 70 years.

The Challenge

The home was created by renovating a former orphanage, with parts of the building dating back to the 1950s. The challenge for the facilities maintenance team was to create optimal living conditions for their residents without incurring significant costs on heating and without compromising on commitments to net-zero carbon.

They had noticed a significant increase in their utilities charges – more than 200% - which raised concerns over their projected energy costs, as well as questions around billing accuracy.

Pembroke House also had a previously-installed solar system and wanted to better understand the power generation and savings that could be achieved as part of their sustainability efforts.

The solution

Smarter Technologies Group installed an adapted AMR meter to monitor real-time energy consumption. This included a solar electric monitor, a main incoming supply electricity monitor, a shed electricity supply monitor, and a gas meter. The data stream from the devices allowed the facilities maintenance team to understand usage patterns and identify and correct excessive consumption.

The Outcome

Early readings showed balanced, in sync energy phases and consistent usage during both weekdays and weekends. This prompted a further investigation into the cause of the price increase. Our team used its diverse energy expertise to investigate their energy contract and provide feedback. The contract had been procured through a broker at the height of the energy crisis and the care home was being penalised as a result.

Smarter Technologies used the data to understand the true consumption of Pembroke House and were able to identify energy contract options that would cut costs.

Real-time monitoring also showed occasional spikes in gas usage, which were attributed to winter conditions. The data led to informed discussions about heating controls and ways to remove unnecessary peaks without compromising resident comfort.

A further benefit of the system is that the home is able to see the impact that solar delivers throughout the year and the effect it is having in reducing consumption from the grid.

“The data from Smarter Technologies’ monitoring solutions is easy to read and understand. As we adopt further energy-saving behavioural changes, we will be able to effectively gauge the impact of operational changes over time. This will be an important part of our long-term energy-saving strategy to reduce our carbon footprint, cut consumption, and manage costs.”
