Smart Farm System Use Cases

Livestock Bolus

Think of the money you could save by the early detection of pneumonia, bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVD) and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) - long before your herd begins to show outward symptoms?

Placed in the rumen of cattle, Smarter Technologies' bolus provides early notifications of disease challenges and can be used as a precise management tool to help detect breeding and performance benefits.

The rumen bolus is designed to provide continuous and reliable temperature measurement of the rumen. All data is transmitted automatically, first to the gateway, and then to a cloud-based system that allows farmers, vets and scientists to process the information and deal with unexpected issues.

Cattle collars give you remote visibility of the location of your livestock, updated every 15 minutes. Save costs and time by checking on your livestock using your bespoke dashboard. You can also set up geofences to receive notifications if livestock moves out of a designated area.

We have used the Orion security system on our farm in Somerset for a number of years. In February 2021, we had an electric fence charger stolen from the farm. We contacted Smarter Technologies, who confirmed that the GPS tag was reporting in Burton on Trent. We headed up there because we had also purchased the RF tracking recovery wand. After a number of hours trying to locate the stolen asset, it became clear that the electric fence charger was moving around the country.

Even though the electric fence charger isn't an expensive piece of equipment, Smarter Technologies deployed their full recovery team to assist. With the help of the team, we located a van that had the stolen items inside. With the help of police, we apprehended the thief.

I cannot praise the Orion™ products and the services of Smarter Technologies highly enough, and we intend to purchase more equipment from them in the future.

The best way to secure your farm in this day and age is to leverage smart technology. A system of sensors and other smart farm equipment gathers data that is sent in real time via a secure network to a central platform. From there, you'll be able to identify any security breaches. The system will also send you instant alerts if your farm's security has been breached in any way.
At the core of a smart farm is connected technology. You need to have smart sensors and devices connected to a communication network. These devices send your farm's data to a central management platform, which can be used to help you use the data effectively. The transition to smart farming starts by identifying your smart farm priorities. Since smart technology can measure virtually anything, it's important to decide on a logical, effective smart technology roll-out strategy. Once you have the network technology in place, you can connect almost anything that you need to measure and manage.
Smart farming has a range of applications in the agricultural industry, from farm security to improving yields and achieving sustainable farming goals. Essentially, smart farming provides real-time data to inform system automations and help you make better farming decisions. You can measure virtually anything - moisture levels in the soil, internal temperature of your cattle, the open/close status of farm gates, the location of your farming equipment... the list goes on. It's recommended that you speak to a smart farming expert to help you identify your smart farming priorities.
