Smart Rail Asset Management

Real-time data for a smarter rail industry and enhanced customer experience

Smart Rail Asset Management

End-to-end railway asset management and security system

Valuable railways assets are damaged, misplaced or stolen every year, posing safety risks as well as damaging the overall customer experience. A smart railway asset lifecycle management system gives a real-time view of how these assets are utilised, streamlining, automating and optimising the railway supply chain and rail asset lifecycle. Smarter Technologies’ Orion Data Network represents the latest in asset tracking and site security technology. Orion can be used to track and monitor personnel, station assets and rail freight in real time. Our comprehensive solution allows you to create a smarter, safer, greener and more efficient railway with better services and customer experience.

Features of Our Smart Rail Solutions

  • Affordable technology

  • Carries data without relying on a mobile phone network, which means no SIM cards and reduced commercial costs.

  • Integrates with existing management and security solutions

  • A digital display of the location and position of all tagged assets

  • Panic buttons allow individuals and lone workers in remote areas to send instant SOS alerts

  • The ability to switch a stolen asset into beacon mode to allow a directional scanner to follow the asset at a distance and pinpoint its exact location

How Our Smart Rail Asset Management System Works

Each asset you wish to track will need a smart tag installed. These tags transmit data to a network via Smarter Technologies’ Orion Data Network. An Orion gateway with an omnidirectional aerial will be installed at various sites on your railway, creating a private security ‘bubble’ around your property. Gateways are also positioned in other locations to track rail freight in transit.

Data from the Orion gateways are presented on your customised central management dashboard, which gives you real-time visibility on the status of all your assets as well as reporting and analytics.

If an incident occurs, the system can instantly alert any connected device to enable quick response between railway stations and tracks, headquarters, and our recovery teams who can liaise with the local police. The Orion Data Network can also be integrated with existing CCTV and security systems.

Monitor Asset Status and Condition

Smarter Technologies’ tags use sensor technology to monitor environmental and other conditions such as temperature, tamper, motion, tilt, moisture levels, position and more. This data reports into your central management dashboard, giving you a holistic view of not only your assets’ location data, but also its current status. If predefined thresholds are reached, an instant alert will be sent to everyone on the watch list. Alerts can also be scheduled and activated as required.

Optimising the Railway Asset Lifecycle

With so many valuable assets at stations, along the railway track and on trains, it’s important to prolong the asset lifecycle and make asset inventory, maintenance, retirement and repurchasing as seamless as possible. The data collected and analysed by Smarter Technologies’ rail asset management system helps you deliver services in a safe and sustainable way while minimising costs.

Real-time insights enable predictive maintenance scheduling, and automatic alerts on the condition of your assets indicate when they need fixing and replacing. You’ll also be able to make better-informed business decisions that prolong asset life and save both time and money.

Track, Monitor and Recover Railway Freight

By attaching our smart tags to freight containers travelling on the railway system, you’ll be able to determine the location of both the container asset and the valuable cargo. In addition, you can include a wide variety of sensors to measure environmental factors that impact the railway freight container and its contents. By tracking both location and status, you can keep cargo safe, maintain its quality and optimise the life of your containers and pallets.

Combatting Cable Theft

The theft of metal cables is a big problem in the railway industry. Along with copper cables, thieves and organised criminal gangs also target aluminium cables, overhead power lines, fencing and other metal to sell for scrap. When a cable is cut, most railway networks will bring all trains to a standstill as an essential safety mechanism. However, this leads to lengthy delays in the railway timetable.

Smarter Technologies’ railway security system monitors the remote expanses of the railway system to deter and prevent theft through covert and overt tracking along with monitoring and security systems. If an incident does occur, we help to ensure a quick recovery by alerting relevant parties (including the police) to the theft and tracking the location of the stolen cable. We also supply invaluable evidence to secure the arrest and conviction of thieves.

Railway Personnel Safety

Railway workers are often required to be in remote locations while working on track installation, signal repair and other maintenance tasks. While out in the field, these workers are potentially vulnerable to injury and criminals activity. Smarter Technologies’ lone worker solutions offer location tagging and SOS panic buttons that protect railway personnel and their equipment.
